For nine months of the year, the Georgia Writers Association hosts 2-hour writers workshops that focus on some aspect of the writing life: craft, finding an agent, publishing, marketing, and so much more. Past invited authors have included Anjali Enjeti, Sumita Chakraborty, Kerry Neville, and others. Our workshops are held at Elevator Factory, 437 Memorial Dr. SE, A-2, Atlanta, GA 30312.

Other annual events include the Georgia Author of the Year Awards (GAYA) and the Red Clay Writers Conference. GAYA is an annual award that honors authors published in the previous calendar year. The awards cover thirteen categories in both fiction and nonfiction genres. Each year, one winner and one finalist are selected from each category and announced at the GAYA banquet and ceremony. Additionally, the Red Clay Writers Conference is an all-day event that is comprised of multiple workshops that cover topics such as writing, marketing, and publishing.

If you would like for your literary event to appear on the calendar, please fill out the form here. All submissions are subject to review and approval.

GWA Workshop–Portals to the Past: The Nature of Memory

May 18, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

We will look at the ways that we can access our own profound memories through close observation of the present. Whether through ekphrasis, the close study of an object, or the observation of a person’s behavior, we can draw upon our past to offer insight into the present and the future. The tangible world is our best route to the world of metaphor…it’s also an effective way to combat writer’s block.

Robert Pfeiffer received his MFA and PhD in Creative Writing from Georgia State University. He has published two collections of poetry. His most recent book, The Inexhaustible Before, was published in March by Plain View Press. Individual poems have appeared in journals internationally such as Mudfish, The Connecticut River Review, Indefinite Space, Iodine Poetry Journal, The Haight Ashbury Literary Journal, The Flint Hills Review, Freefall Magazine, and The Concho River Review and previously in The Fourth River. He currently lives in Decatur, Georgia with his wife and daughter, and is an Associate Professor of English at Clayton State University.
