For nine months of the year, the Georgia Writers Association hosts 2-hour writers workshops that focus on some aspect of the writing life: craft, finding an agent, publishing, marketing, and so much more. Past invited authors have included Anjali Enjeti, Sumita Chakraborty, Kerry Neville, and others. Our workshops are held at Elevator Factory, 437 Memorial Dr. SE, A-2, Atlanta, GA 30312.

Other annual events include the Georgia Author of the Year Awards (GAYA) and the Red Clay Writers Conference. GAYA is an annual award that honors authors published in the previous calendar year. The awards cover thirteen categories in both fiction and nonfiction genres. Each year, one winner and one finalist are selected from each category and announced at the GAYA banquet and ceremony. Additionally, the Red Clay Writers Conference is an all-day event that is comprised of multiple workshops that cover topics such as writing, marketing, and publishing.

If you would like for your literary event to appear on the calendar, please fill out the form here. All submissions are subject to review and approval.

Weird Science: Writing Scientific Fact into Poetry & Creative Nonfiction

August 10, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Scientific fact can shape and inform poems and CNF in many ways. In this workshop, Olson will review five functions of research and science in creative writing. Participants will write and read poems and CNF to learn how horseshoe crab blood, the honeybee thermal defense, leishmaniasis, and other remarkable, true things from the natural world can be woven into compelling and distinct poetry and prose.

Christina Olson is the author of the full-length poetry collections Terminal Human Velocity and Before I Came Home Naked, as well as the chapbooks Weird Science and Rook & The M.E.: A Law and Order-Inspired Narrative. Her most recent chapbook, The Last Mastodon, was a winner of the Rattle 2019 Chapbook Contest and will be published this December. Other poetry and creative nonfiction have appeared in magazines including The Atlantic, The Normal School, Quarterly West, Passages North, Third Coast, Virginia Quarterly Review, and The Best Creative Nonfiction, Volume Three. She is an assistant professor of creative writing at Georgia Southern University.
