Events

For nine months of the year, the Georgia Writers Association hosts 2-hour writers workshops that focus on some aspect of the writing life: craft, finding an agent, publishing, marketing, and so much more. Past invited authors have included Anjali Enjeti, Sumita Chakraborty, Kerry Neville, and others. Our workshops are held at Elevator Factory, 437 Memorial Dr. SE, A-2, Atlanta, GA 30312.

Other annual events include the Georgia Author of the Year Awards (GAYA) and the Red Clay Writers Conference. GAYA is an annual award that honors authors published in the previous calendar year. The awards cover thirteen categories in both fiction and nonfiction genres. Each year, one winner and one finalist are selected from each category and announced at the GAYA banquet and ceremony. Additionally, the Red Clay Writers Conference is an all-day event that is comprised of multiple workshops that cover topics such as writing, marketing, and publishing.

If you would like for your literary event to appear on the calendar, please fill out the form here. All submissions are subject to review and approval.

GWA Online Workshop With Booker T. Mattison

April 11 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

April 11, 2020
12:00 PM on Zoom for GWA Members

For this month’s workshop, we’ve got Booker T. Mattison‘s “Falling In Love With Your Antagonist.” The workshop will take place on Saturday, April 11th at 12:00 PM on Zoom.

About the Workshop
Writers should love all of their characters. This is easy when it’s your protagonist and the characters who support them. But should you also love your antagonist? Yes, especially your antagonist. This workshop will help you find new love!

Booker T. Mattison is an author and filmmaker who wrote the screenplay for and directed the film adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston’s classic story The Gilded Six Bits, which aired on Showtime. It starred Chad L. Coleman (The Walking DeadThe Wire) in his first leading role. The film also starred T’keyah Crystal Keymah (That’s So RavenIn Living Color), and Wendell Pierce (The WireJack Ryan). The Hollywood Reporter said, “Mattison’s direction and feel for her characters match up to Hurston’s sterling piece of fiction…full of atmosphere and strongly developed characters.” Mattison’s most recent short film Ungubani (Who Are You?) stars Al-Jaleel Knox (Sweet MagnoliasDynasty), Leah Merritt (Insatiable) and T’Keyah Crystal Keymah.

Mattison’s sophomore novel Snitch received a starred review in Publishers Weekly that said, “Author and filmmaker Mattison’s sophomore outing reads like its ready for screen adaptation… Mattison has a superb ear and his skills keep on growing.” His debut novel Unsigned Hype was nominated for a South Carolina Book Award. Mattison received his Master of Fine Arts in film and television production from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He teaches directing and screenwriting at the University of Georgia.
