For nine months of the year, the Georgia Writers Association hosts 2-hour writers workshops that focus on some aspect of the writing life: craft, finding an agent, publishing, marketing, and so much more. Past invited authors have included Anjali Enjeti, Sumita Chakraborty, Kerry Neville, and others. Our workshops are held at Elevator Factory, 437 Memorial Dr. SE, A-2, Atlanta, GA 30312.

Other annual events include the Georgia Author of the Year Awards (GAYA) and the Red Clay Writers Conference. GAYA is an annual award that honors authors published in the previous calendar year. The awards cover thirteen categories in both fiction and nonfiction genres. Each year, one winner and one finalist are selected from each category and announced at the GAYA banquet and ceremony. Additionally, the Red Clay Writers Conference is an all-day event that is comprised of multiple workshops that cover topics such as writing, marketing, and publishing.

If you would like for your literary event to appear on the calendar, please fill out the form here. All submissions are subject to review and approval.

Unleash Your Imagination: A Poetry Workshop

February 8 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

We will discover a series of exercises to help unleash the imagination and create poems, including imitation and borrowing. Not only poets access their imagination, but also they use specific skills to craft their work. We will focus on two basic aspects of poetry writing: syntax (the way in which words are placed in sentences or phrases) and language compression.

Brigitte Byrd grew up in France where she trained as a dancer before migrating to the United States. A transnational poet, she is the author of three books. Her fourth poetry collection Onomo, Flaubert! is scheduled for publication spring 2020. The HuffPost Contemporary Poetry Reviews called her third book Song of a Living Room “some of the most accomplished prose poems of the last decade.” Professor of English at Clayton State University, she also serves as Associate Editor for Tupelo Quarterly. Brigitte lives in Atlanta.
