Criteria and Scoring Process

The quality of an applicant’s credentials will be evaluated by a peer review panel based on a writing sample and the following criteria:

Artistic Merit: 50 points

The writer is recognized regionally, nationally, or internationally, having been published by recognized independent presses, magazines, or publishing houses. Honors and awards from respected journals and/or competitions as well as services, such as commissions and presentations, are also considered. At least twelve of these points must be earned through publication credentials.

Artistic Excellence: 50 Points

The writing demonstrates a high-level of skill, knowledge of the form/genre, and unique stylistic vision.

Writing Samples

The writing sample should be no more than 10 pages of fiction or creative nonfiction, six poems, or two scenes from a play. All items should be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF formats and should represent an example of the writer’s best work. Please do not send books. Any writing samples that exceed these guidelines will not be reviewed.

Online Application

Only information submitted on the application will be adjudicated by the review panelists. Please use the extra space provided on the application for additional details. NOTE: Although the minimum number of publication points required for eligibility is 12, points are allocated for each published piece you record in your application, and this affects your total score in the Artistic Merit category.
