Alvin earned his Eagle Scout rank in Troop 103, Decatur, Georgia. In 1997 he graduated from Washington and Lee University with a major in Politics. After he interned in the Washington office of U.S. Representative John Linder (Georgia), he took a position in the business consulting division of Arthur Andersen & Company. Upon returning to his alma mater, Washington and Lee, he worked in philanthropy and began to ponder the effects Scouting had on him and others, many of whom had become successful leaders. In thousands of miles of travel, Townley has not only interviewed hundreds of Eagle Scouts, but also he took time from writing to go to the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina to help salvage life for the residents. Peter Joseph, editor of Thomas Dunne Books (a division of St. Martin’s Press) commented, “Alvin is the most altruistic author I’ve got.” During this phase of his life, he also worked in philanthropy and coached track and field at Atlanta’s Marist School. He worked with Reach for Excellence, a tuition-free program that benefits talented middle-school students from underserved communities.
