The 44th Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards, held Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the KSU Center in Kennesaw, Georgia was a remarkable success. Nominees and winners alike were honored during the Awards ceremony hosted by GWA co-founder and award winning writer, Dr. Tony Grooms and GAYA nominee and GWA board member, Dr. Aaron Levy. This year, 82 Georgia Authors were nominated in 13 categories. Other awards included the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Taran Family Memorial Award. The Lifetime Achievement Award is selected from Georgia Authors who have contributed significantly to the landscape of Georgia writing. Dan Veach, Editor of Atlanta Review won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership in Poetry Atlanta and beginning the Atlanta Review keeping Atlanta on top of the Poetry scene and as he noted, this kind of support for poetry in the Atlanta community is not the norm.
