gayaDr. Blues’ Guide to Making Relationships Work: 50 Quick Tips that will Save Your Relationship

Brown Books Publishing, Dallas, Texas, 2007

105pp, $13.95

Relationship books, for the most part, are bought by women. Women who think their partner could use some advice mark pages and ask the clueless one to read them. Others leave the book around, hoping the significant other will pick it up out of curiosity and turn to the appropriate bookmark. This rarely works. Try opening a book at random. If you see large blocks of type, you might turn to a page with more “white space” or graphics.

Enter the Drs. Blue, a brother and sister team with the most guy-friendly relationship book ever. No long discussions, complicated exercises, or guilt trips—just workable principles distilled down to essences, in large white type (on blue pages, naturally) with effective photos to illustrate each tip.

Tip No. 6 - Treat the Other Person with Kindness:
The Wrong Way
·         Speak negatively to the other person.
·         Hold on to negative thoughts about the other person.
·         Treat the other person with less respect than you would a stranger.

The Right Way
·         Verbalize any positive thoughts so that you stay connected to the other person.
·         Be kind so that the other person knows you care.
·         Display kindness in the midst of conflict.

“Start by focusing on one tip,” say the doctors, “and watch as your small effort yields big rewards.”

A good gift book—the wedding season is approaching.

Richard Blue, Ph.D, specializes in relationship counseling and reaches more than 100,000 listeners on his weekly radio program on STAR 94.1. Lisa Blue, Ph.D, J.D., counseled both individuals and families before turning to the practice of law.
Ann Lovette

Anne Lovett, a Georgia native, began her writing career with a humor column for her high school newspaper, hoping to write science fiction. She was educated at Emory and Georgia Tech, receiving a Ph.D. in natural products chemistry. She helped to found a manufacturing and technical supplies company now doing business nationwide and eventually made her way back to writing, though not science fiction. A member of Georgia Writers, Georgia Romance Writers, AWP and Rosemary Daniell’s Zona Rosa Alpha Babes, her short fiction has appeared in Aethlon: Journal of Sport Literature, The Distillery, The Jewish Women’s’ Literary Annual, and Red Wheelbarrow. Non-fiction, poetry, and essays have appeared locally, and several novels are in the pipeline. She is a regular contributor to the online journal The Grapevine Art & Soul Salon (http://www.barbaraknott.net/).
